How are refugee crises solved? This has become an urgent question as global displacement rates continue to climb, and refugee situations now persist for years if not decades. The resolution of displacement and the conflicts that force refugees from their homes is often explained as a top-down process led and controlled by governments and international organizations. This book takes a different approach. Through contributions from scholars working in politics, anthropology, law, sociology and philosophy, and a wide range of case studies, it explores the diverse ways in which refugees themselves interpret, create and pursue solutions to their plight. It investigates the empirical and normative significance of refugees' engagement as agents in these processes, and their implications for research, policy and practice. This book speaks both to academic debates and to the broader community of peacebuilding, humanitarian and human rights scholars concerned with the nature and dynamics of agency in contentious political contexts, and identifies insights that can inform policy and practice.
A collection of thoughts demonstrating the power of word which should be used to study the fundamental questions of life...
"there are days when I forget" "about love" "kindness" "compassion" "there are times when i ignore" "pain" "fear" "doubt" Dare to embark on the spiritual and philosophical exploration that is Bradley James's stunning new poetry compilation, "Raison d'etre, II." This collection of thoughts has been written and gathered by the author over the past twenty-five years. Known as a critically-acclaimed scholar, philosopher, and writer, James has held himself to a code of privacy that has never been broken-until now. Celebrated by his fellow writers as a "monumental work," James's "Raison d'etre, II" follows volume" I "and sublimely captures the echoing power of the written word. Through the course of "An Evening's Day," "A Midnight Sun," "This Planet of Wind and Rain," "Heaven Falls and Hell Breaks Three," and "Her Tones of Prophecy," readers will be moved to look inside themselves in order to fully appreciate the quiet beauty of James's words. Silently contemplate life's most fragile moments contained within the five chapters of "Raison d'etre, II." It is a journey that will not be forgotten.
Some moments in life are meant to be savored, enjoyed through slow, deliberate consumption. But too often, such moments are met instead with overeagerness and excessive hunger, which threaten to devour the context of the moment before its content is even partially digested. For this reason, Bradley James requests that you take your time and be patient with Raison d'etre. It should be read only a few pages at a time, in a quiet place where you can thoroughly consider the deep, sometimes dark mental images and prodding questions that will inevitably pervade your thoughts and tempt you to turn just one more page-even though that's exactly what you've been told not to do. Comprised of two separate volumes, Raison d'etre was described by Kirkus Independent Reviews as an epic, multipart poetry cycle about the nature of life and the transience of relationships and a free-form, often thought-provoking verse confessional in the tradition of Leaves of Grass. Both standing alone and taken together with the second book in the collection, Raison d'etre, Volume I deeply explores the author's thoughts and philosophies on life, death, spirituality, and the essence of what makes human life so precious and unique.

In any satellite communication, the Doppler shift associated with the satellite's position and velocity must be calculated in order to determine the carrier frequency. If the satellite state vector is unknown then some estimate must be formed of the Doppler-shifted carrier frequency. One elementary technique is to examine the signal spectrum and base the estimate on the dominant spectral component. If, however, the carrier is spread (as in most satellite communications) this technique may fail unless the chip rate-to-data rate ratio (processing gain) associated with the carrier is small. In this case, there may be enough spectral energy to allow peak detection against a noise background. In this thesis, we present a method to estimate the frequency (without knowledge of the Doppler shift) of a spread-spectrum carrier assuming a small processing gain and binary-phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. Our method relies on an averaged discrete Fourier transform along with peak detection on spectral match filtered data. We provide theory and simulation results indicating the accuracy of this method. In addition, we will describe an all-digital hardware design based around a Motorola DSP56303 and high-speed A/D which implements this technique in real-time. The hardware design is to be used in NMSU's implementation of NASA's demand assignment, multiple access (DAMA) service.
Like tentacles on a vast octopus, the firsthand investigations in The Blood Bankers all lead to one core. A financial detective of sorts, investigative journalist Jim Henry analyzes a range of scandals, including the looting of the Philippines by the Marcos family and the financial collapse of nations throughout the developing world. A rogues' gallery of international criminals owes its existence to the dramatic growth of the underground global economy over the last two decades. Our world is being reshaped, often in sinister fashion, by wide open capital markets and an international banking network that exists to launder hundreds of billions of dollars in ill-gotten gains. Here is an inside look at globalization's dark side--the new high growth global markets for influence-peddling, capital flight, money laundering, weapons, drugs, tax evasion, child labor, illegal immigration, and other forms of transnational crime.
This book examines translanguaging as a resource which can disrupt the privileging of particular voices, and a social practice which enables collaboration within and across groups of people. Addressing the themes of collaboration and transformation, the chapters critically examine how people work together to catalyse change in diverse global contexts, experiences and traditions. The authors suggest an epistemological and methodological turn to the study of translanguaging, which is particularly reflected in the collaborative, arts-based and action research/activist approaches followed in the chapters. The book will be of particular interest to scholars using ethnographic, critical and collaborative action and activist research approaches to the study of multilingualism in educational and creative arts contexts.
